Imani has a TagPay wallet that she uses to keep cash out of her pockets and receive money transfered from her husband. She knows she can get cash from an agent or ATM whenever she needs it but prefers to use her phone to pay in stores using the money in her TagPay account.

Wallet: How it Works

Loading a wallet

Customers can load their TagPay wallet by depositing cash with an agent or retailer or with a payment card through the TagPay website. Funds transferred from another TagPay wallet as well as salaries, loans, and pensions received are instantly loaded onto a TagPay wallet associated to the beneficiary’s mobile phone number. If the phone number is not yet associated to a TagPay wallet, a wallet is automatically created when funds are received.

Paying with a wallet

Customers can use their TagPay wallet for a range of payments including:

  • Person-to-person payments and money transfers via the TagPay website or by calling an Interactive Voice Response service and following verbal instructions.
  • Proximity purchases at various merchant acceptance points: the customer’s cell phone must be physically present to sign the transaction using NSDT™.
  • Internet purchases on various e-commerce websites: NSDT™ is used to verify that the customer’s cell phone is present during the online payment.
  • Bill payments and airtime top-up done through an IVR, a designated retail location, or on the web.

When using TagPay to pay on a website or in a store, the customer is invited to enter his mobile phone number and pass code. TagPay instantly calls the customer’s mobile phone sends an NSDT™ chirp through the webpage or merchant’s POS*. When the chirp is heard by the customer’s phone the transaction is completed.

*The merchant’s POS can be an online computer, dedicated TagPay mobile payment terminal, or the merchant’s cell phone.

Withdrawing cash

Customers can withdraw cash from their TagPay wallet in designated retail and agent locations or from enabled ATMs. The customer’s mobile phone must be present to authorize any withdrawal.
